Still working, still planning

Had I not already given notice of termination, today would be my last opportunity to submit a 2-weeks notice to my employer and still be on schedule. It’s Friday, which usually means I’m about to drive to Des Moines to visit Holly or that she’s on her way to Cedar Falls, but we’re keeping to ourselves this weekend. This should give me a chance to repair the holes in my apartment walls. I’ve still got a pretty sizable checklist to work through before I can take my first step toward Katahdin.

I think I’ll start jogging again this weekend.  I was jogging last summer, but I pushed too hard and wound up with a stress fracture in my right ankle.  A month later it was healed but I didn’t resume jogging regularly, and the onset of winter certainly didn’t help matters.  I’m actually in pretty good shape, given that I work a desk job for 8 hours, 5 days a week.  I stand 6’1″ and weigh 160 lbs.  I just had a physical two weeks prior and Doc says I’m healthy – even my cholesterol numbers look good.  I even went to the dentist for the first time in 6 years, and my teeth are in good shape.  I’ve got nothing special to worry about, but I need to start working my legs before I start hiking to mitigate the risk of another stress fracture.  I’ll start jogging tonight, and I’ll wear the sandals I’m going to wear hiking so I can start building calluses in all the right places.

  1. Make sure to run on the balls of your feet. If you aren’t wearing running shoes and you run heal toe you are going to fuck up your, knees, hips, back, and feet. But if you start off with a long distance (not half a mile) running on the balls of your feet you’ll fuck up your ankles b/c you don’t have the muscles around your ankles and in your feat built up yet. Just take it easy and work up to something big gradually or your going to end up with another stress fracture.

  2. 100% true. Barefoot/minimalist is the way to go, but if you jump straight in you’ll be a gimp for weeks.

  3. You should take long lunches and do some laps around the lake since the weather is getting nicer.

Or do it at the end of the day, so you don’t smell up the office.
    :P
